Finding a hoof oil that doesn’t reek of bad odors can be challenging. Many hoof oils and conditioners are made with harsh chemicals such as turpentine, and other organic solvents. Others try to mask the turpentine smell with strong synthetic fragrances. I have tried to compose a list of chemically clean hoof products made with natural oil bases and moisturizers which have little to no scent and no harmful chemicals, including petroleum.
KaiNalu Organic Hoof Oil – This is my product. All organic botanicals including: Sesame Seed, Safflower, Castor and Soy Bean Oils; the organic Essential oils Thyme, Cypress, and Lavender. Local farriers have noticed and commented on the healthy improvement of horses’ hooves after this oil has been used. Even old cowboys who were previously attached to their pine tar have been converted!
Bo’s Hoof Conditioner – peanut oil base, Carrot Phytol, Carrot Seed, and Rosemary Oil — this has a mild, pleasing scent from the essential oils.
Hoof Oil – made with Lanolin, Linseed Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Aloe Vera Gel, Lavender Oil, Rosemary Oil, Vitamin A, D and E, Lecithin.
Dr Harvey’s Organic Hoof Cream – Shea Butter and Aloe moisturize and heal, while Calendula oil fights fungus and bacteria.
Hoof Alive – has a mild scent from the different oils. Should be used sparingly as it has a thick waxy texture. No petroleum. Lanolin, Glycerin, coconut Oil, Safflower Oil, Almond Oil, Avocado Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Lecithin, Vitamin E, Aloe Vera Oil, Anti-sequester Surfactants, Wetting Agents.
Farrier’s Magic Natural Formula – They offer a Natural formulation, along with their original pine tar brands. Arnica, Canadian Willowherb, and Myrcia Oil (a natural antiseptic).
Sound – Hoof conditioner with natural oils. This is interesting because it is strongly scented with Vanilla. But it is NOT a chemical vanilla smell; instead it smells like a vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. Ingredients: Essential fatty acids, retinol (palmitic acid, a form of Vitamin A), triglycerides, natural antioxidants, gamma-linoleic acid, and natural Omega-6 and Omega-9. Natural vanilla scent.
For Hoof Injuries:
Epsom Salt – For hoof abscess, soak hoof in epsom salt and warm water. A fragrance free, inexpensive yet effective solution.
